Every August, the Daniel K. Akaka ALA Hawai‘i Food Show & Conference brings together two communities with a long, shared history in the islands: Hawai‘i’s local businesses and the U.S. military.

Hosted by the American Logistics Association (ALA), the annual event creates a platform for local companies to introduce their products to the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) and Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM), the very people who decide what service members and their families will find on shelves across Hawai‘i and beyond.

For many Hawai‘i businesses, the show offers something rare: direct access to military buyers—an open door that can lead to steady, reliable sales and allow local goods, crafted with aloha, to travel far beyond the islands. One strong meeting can help a neighborhood bakery, family-run farm, or local coffee roaster expand its customer base in ways that might otherwise take years to accomplish.

The impact goes beyond the Show & Conference. In the months leading up to the event, vendors receive personalized guidance to strengthen their pitch, refine their packaging, and navigate federal procurement requirements. This support is especially helpful for small and family-run businesses who pour their heart into their craft but may be new to the world of government contracting. By the time they step onto the show floor, they’re confident, prepared, and ready to share their story.

When Hawai‘i-made products make their way to commissaries and exchange shelves, the benefits ripple through the community:

  • Jobs for local families
  • New opportunities for farmers, roasters, bakers, and artisans
  • Increased visibility for homegrown brands
  • Economic activity that stays in the state

Since the food show’s inception, more than 6,600 Hawai‘i products have been introduced to military buyers, a reflection of the diversity, innovation, and quality of the islands’ small business community.

For Hawai‘i residents, the ALA Food Show is a powerful reminder of how the military’s presence can support local economic resilience. By building real, structured pathways for local vendors to access military retail systems, the event helps Hawai‘i businesses grow while sharing the flavors and craftsmanship of our islands with service members and their families.

The ALA Food Show is more than an annual event. It’s a partnership rooted in collaboration, opportunity, and aloha—a bridge that uplifts local entrepreneurs, strengthens Hawai‘i’s economy, and ensures that the spirit of the islands is represented in military communities near and far.
