In April, the Mākua Military Reservation in Waiʻanae became home to a powerful symbol of harmony: a Peace Pole inscribed with the messages “May Peace Prevail on Earth” and “Hoʻomaluhia Me Ka Honua.”

The installation was a collaborative effort involving U.S. Representative Jill Tokuda, Mālama Mākua, the Waiʻanae Moku Kupuna Council and U.S. Army Garrison Hawaiʻi.

The Peace Pole is part of a global initiative to promote peace and unity. Its placement at Mākua represents a commitment to bridging divides and working toward a future free from conflict. Representative Tokuda expressed the significance of the moment, saying “During this time of great turbulence and divide in our country, it is even more important that we lean into peace and show respect and aloha for one another.”

Sparky Rodrigues of Mālama Mākua also shared, “Our job is to remind the people of Hawaiʻi that building relationships is better than building fences. The aloha embrace welcomes all peace-loving people everywhere.”

The Peace Pole now stands as a symbol of hope, reminding us that fostering peace requires collaboration, respect, and continued commitment to unity.
